Tick Tock – Tick Time Matters

ticks

Had a fascinating conversation with a doctor yesterday.  As we live in the Land of Deer and Deer Mice with ticks and Lyme Disease in abundance, he offered some very interesting information.

This doctor removes dozens upon dozens of ticks from people every week.  As I live with my sweetheart and two dogs, I was reassured when he said to ignore a lot of what is on the Internet that causes such fear around ticks.

Instead he outlined the following:

1.  Check yourself and your pets thoroughly every day if you have been outside.  The good news is you have up to 72 hours to be safe from Lyme Disease if you get the tick out within that time period.  Yay!  🙂

2.  Remove the tick with tweezers.  Do NOT pull it out, as you don’t want to leave its little twin mouth saws (chelicerae) flanking an appendage (a hypostome) that appears to be a kind of long, barbed sword in the skin.  (The doctor did say if they somehow stay in there, the body will naturally flush them out over time, though.)

Grip the head (or as close as you can to the head) with the tweezers, and do TWO FULL ROTATIONS with them.  Then gently “rotate-pull” the tick out.  (If you lose your grip on the tweezers, simply start again.)  Put the tick in a little paper cup and dispose of it properly, as it will most likely still be alive and able to walk around.

3.  Do not take any antibiotics at this time, nor do a blood test, unless you believe the tick has been in you or your pet for at least a month.  Lyme Disease does not appear for four – six weeks.

4.  If you get sick four to six weeks after a tick bite, do NOT dismiss it as the flu.  Symptoms for Lyme Disease can be fever/chills, headache, fatigue, muscle ache, rash, etc.  This can also happen if the tick only bites you, yet does not imbed itself.

If you feel “off,” or have any of the symptoms above during the four to six week mark, go to a doctor IMMEDIATELY and get a blood test.  In New York where we live, and possibly other states, they will put you on an antibiotic right then and there – without even waiting for the result – because of a crazy rule in our state.

(NY requires that the blood be tested in California, and the wait time for that turnaround matters if you indeed have the Lyme Disease.)

If you go on the antibiotics in this “new” phase of the illness, there is a nearly 100% chance any Lyme Disease will be cured.  Yay again!  🙂

5.  In many parts of the world, like where we live, ticks abound.  A fenced yard will not prevent them from wandering in.  The doctor’s nurse said she has even seen them walking up her screen door.

It is a good idea to check over and wash your clothes when you have been outside on grass or in the woods.  Your pets can also bring them in on their fur to drop off in your house.  You don’t have to be neurotic about it, but it is wise to be vigilant.

OK, so as I KNOW all creatures have a purpose for being on earth, this conversation spurred me to look for the GOOD that ticks do.  Here is an interesting link that explains their purpose: http://insects.about.com/od/ticksmites/f/What-Good-Are-Ticks.htm

Hope this helps you have worry-free outdoor time, as it is more important to spend as much time in Nature as possible than staying inside due to concern about ticks!  Knowledge is power.

To your happy, One-With-Nature, healthy self!  Love, Kathy ♥♥♥

For All Women Who Are Not Biological Mothers on Mother’s Day

28302_1409931335638_3325111_nWith some of my 4th grade students back in 1978. Holy wow, these kids are 47 years old now!  🙂

Today is Mother’s Day.

Yesterday a long-time friend of mine told me I would have made a wonderful mother. This stirred up feelings I haven’t had for a while, and I got a strong hit to share some thoughts with all women who will not bear children in this lifetime. So here goes…

You/we are not “less than.” There are reasons why we have not had children from our wombs. Some reasons may be revealed to us, some may not, and some women simply don’t want to be mothers… and that’s all okay. KNOW that our purpose and being on earth is simply different than for those who bring children into the world.

I understand that for many women, (and their partners), not having one’s own children can be overwhelmingly heartbreaking. I know many couples and single women who have tried everything, often many times over, to get pregnant… but to no avail, or have had one or more miscarriages. I feel for everyone in this position, and hope the following will help those who feel the loss profoundly.

For me, I accepted early on that I would never be a mother in the biological sense.

Although I adore children, it was a conscious decision I made in my 20’s for several reasons. When told by doctors that with my rare A negative blood type I would absolutely have difficulty bearing them, I felt that was the Universe telling me my decision was the correct one.

(Now I know that is not true, as there are things that can be done to work with negative Rh factors, but back in those days that was what was often said. Even so, I believe the telling of that to me was for a higher purpose.)

There was also the fact that the only two men I ever truly wanted to have children with disappeared from my life during my child-bearing years… again, I believe, for a higher purpose. (Both those men went on to have children with other women, and although it was hard to learn about at first, now I am truly happy for them.)

Looking back, I realize I immersed myself in some way with children ever since. I got a degree in Elementary Education, and taught 4th grade. As a flight attendant I always paid extra attention to the children on my flights, trying to help them have fun and relieve the parents a bit.  When I later became a massage therapist, I took additional courses and seminars in Maternity Massage – becoming a Pregnancy Massage specialist, and teaching Maternity Massage as well.

In 2004 my friend Virge and I founded the “Bahamian Children’s Trust Fund” to help children, the elderly, and animals recover from two hurricanes in a row that decimated Grand Bahama Island, where I once lived.

That experience guided me to start a global all-volunteer 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Dream One World, where we have helped hundreds and hundreds of children throughout the United States and five other countries. Currently we are building a school and orphanage for 150 children in Uganda, East Africa. (www.dreamoneworld.org)

I am only telling you all this because if you are a person grieving for your own unborn children, please rejoice in the fact that, like me, whatever you have done and continue to choose to do in life impacts the growth process of other human beings – including children and parents.

Look back on your life. You are unique. Like the butterfly effect, your actions have been and continue to be equally as important as the actions of those who bear children.

Of course, this can be through the beauty of adoption. It can also be through teaching music lessons, or donating time and/or money to a charity, or words of wisdom to a niece or nephew, or volunteering at a homeless shelter, or a million other things you have done or said throughout your lifetime that you probably never thought were as important as having children of your own. Things that those with children may not have the time and/or finances to do, yet so appreciate those who do them.

It all matters. Think back on the people who greatly influenced your life – a teacher, an employer, a friend, a relative, etc. It didn’t matter to you whether they had children or not.  What mattered was the wisdom, support, and inspiration they gave you.

Just as you treasure those people in your heart, you are treasured more than you know in other hearts.

We are all on this planet for reasons. It is not our job to figure out why we were or were not able to bear children. It is our job to be grateful for all life, and to enjoy and help those who are here as best we can.

Oh, and for those who are worried about growing old without someone to “take care of them,” that is never a reason to have children. Plus there are no guarantees in life anyway. As a wise woman once said, “Family is who shows up.”

KNOW we are all one huge family on this planet. We are all connected. We are here to live life to its fullest, whatever that looks like for us, no matter what sadness happens along the way. When we accept difficult events, losses, and grief, we can continue on with more empathy for others on similar paths… and ultimately become beacons of light for those still trapped in shadows or darkness.

Acceptance is gigantic. I tell all my clients to fly their F.L.A.G.s of Forgiveness, Love, Acceptance, and Gratitude at all times, no matter what. This means for yourself, for all others, (no exceptions), and for what is.

What is, is. Accept it, with love. Again, KNOW there are reasons for it.

Open your heart to the mothering you were meant to do in this lifetime. When you do that, your true purpose will find you.

With so much love on this day and always, Kathy ♥♥♥

Releasing Anger, Accepting Peace

Everything Sky Quote

I admit, I love Facebook.  However, every day I see posts of anger there about injustices in the world, divisive political issues, determined ideologies, etc., and it made me think of the anger people live with on a daily basis.

KNOW that anger lives in the liver, and over time causes havoc and illness there. The photo above is my new mantra. When you accept and turn everything to LOVE, you can focus on all the good in your life, your community, your country, and the world.

Anger begets more anger. Love begets more love. Peace begets more peace. There is so much GOOD happy-ning in the world, and far more good people than bad people. We are just under the radar, not on the 6:00 news.

I always suggest to my clients and in my “The Power of Know” book to turn off the news as much as possible. Focus on the wonderful aspects in one’s life, and the goodness and beauty that abounds everywhere.

What we think about and what we focus on comes to us – so why not focus on positives?! This is not putting one’s head in the sand. This is literally creating a higher state of consciousness for the planet. Plus feeling peaceful is a much healthier state of being – for all of us.

We are powerful beyond measure to help change the world with truly loving, kind, positive thoughts and actions… while flying our F.L.A.G.s of Forgiveness, Love, Acceptance, and Gratitude for ourselves, for all others, (no exceptions), and for what is.

I am living proof of that. You can be, too.

To your health! Love, Kathy ♥♥♥
