In an ongoing effort to simplify my life, I have a big project underway at home cleaning out files, old photos, etc. Came across this one from Bangkok, Thailand, in the 1980’s. A total stranger walked up to me, draped this python around my neck, and offered to take my picture. Ummmm… OK…
I had never held a snake before. For some reason I expected it to be slimy. It wasn’t. It actually felt amazing.
As a child, I had a reoccurring snake nightmare that would play every few months in my sleep. It started when my parents were getting divorced. It went on for years. Made me very, very afraid of snakes.
Yet for some reason halfway around the world I suddenly agreed to face my fear with a 10′ python.
Thanks to my All-Things-Work-With-Nature mentor Stacey Sophia Robyn, I now KNOW to look up the meaning of an animal totem whenever it appears in one’s life, so here is Snake:
Wisdom, Healing, and Initiation
“This is a powerful totem. It is the symbol of transformation and healing. The Snake is wisdom expressed through healing. The Snake is the symbol of eternity. Your intuition will sharpen and be more accurate.
Snake energy is the energy of wholeness, cosmic consciousness, and the ability to experience anything willingly and without resistance. It is the knowledge that all things are equal in creation.
It also signals a transition in your life. New opportunities and/or changes. Snake is fire medicine, the medicine of transmutation. On a material level, it is vitality; on an emotional level, it is ambition and dreams; on a mental level, it is intellect and power; on a spiritual level (the highest level), it is wisdom, understanding, and wholeness.
Snake magic is heavy magic. Become the Magician and transmute the energy and accept the power of the fire.”
What I KNOW now, but didn’t understand back then, is that the snake in my dream was trying to tell me to accept my parent’s divorce and not resist all the fiery/scary moves, emotions, and changes it brought about.
The snake in Thailand showed up to teach me to step into my power in relationships and follow my intuition more, but I didn’t have the information then, so it took many more years to do so.
Animals, birds, reptile, insects… their appearances are not as random as you might think. When a creature appears to you, either in person or in a dream, take a moment to check out its totem meaning and see if there is a lesson there for you.
It could save you a lot of time and anguish! It may also help you move forward instead of staying stuck in a place that is not necessarily for your highest good.
Sounds woo-woo, yes… yet that is only because much of humanity is rather far removed from Nature and all its gifts these days. When you start truly reconnecting with the earth, its waters, and all its creatures, well, amazing things start happy-ning.
What are YOU afraid of? What creature crossed YOUR path today? Embrace its message, release the fear, and say thank you.
